Project summary:

Warrnambool City Council were able to undertake urgent conservation works to the failing timber elements of the Wollaston Bridge with a $195,000 grant. The suspension bridge was erected across the Merri River in 1890 as an entrance to the Wollaston Estate.

Today, the bridge is one of the oldest surviving cable suspension bridges in Victoria and a local landmark. The bridge provides a key link for pedestrians over the Merri River and is frequently used for birdwatching, cycling, and other recreational activities.

The grant recipient reports:

“Extension of the asset life for the current and future generations has enabled preservation of the important and much cherished social history of the Warrnambool pioneer.”
