Project summary:
Borough of Queenscliff were able to undertake urgent structural stabilisation of the concrete searchlight emplacement at Point Lonsdale Lighthouse with a grant of $90,000.
The emplacement was erected during World War 1 in 1914 and was strategically placed alongside other defence structures near the lighthouse. The searchlight emplacement was temporarily closed to public access due to its poor condition and safety risks, and the grant has enabled the reopening of this historic site to the local community, visitors and preserve it for future generations.
The grant recipient reports
"The structure was closed to the public due to its poor condition and risk of collapse, and so the grant allowed structural rehabilitation of the structure to allow public access."
