Project summary:
Mount Martha House was originally built as a hotel and once used as a camp for boys of missing soldiers and POWs.
The $50,000 grant enabled urgent repairs to the building’s exterior timber elements, including rectifying rot and salt damage as a result of its coastal surrounds.
The works have ensured this highly valued community asset’s ongoing use and availability for a range of community events, classes and a childcare centre.
The grant recipient reports:
“Mount Martha House is a vibrant community facility which is utilised by a variety of community groups, organisations, training and education providers to provide a number of social and community benefits. This includes the provision of early childhood education, clubs, community groups, active classes, training, vocational education as well as not-for-profit organisations who utilise the kitchen to provide meals for our young people and homeless.
Completion of the above works has enabled these and other groups to continue enjoyment of Mt Martha house in a context that celebrates the historical heritage of the building and its community. The funding and undertaking of these works demonstrate to community members and visitors that the heritage values of Mount Martha House are important to both State and Local Government.”
