Project summary:
Churchill Island is the site of the first European settlement in Victoria, with James Grant and the Lady Nelson establishing two timber structures and a garden there in 1801. A grant of $75,000 enabled urgent conservation works to six buildings on the Churchill Island site.
These works included roof, wall and floor repairs, and works to mitigate rising damp, salt attack, corrosion cracking, and deteriorated joinery. The conservation works have ensured the ongoing longevity of the buildings and associated historical tourism to the island.
The grant recipient reports:
“The wider community and our volunteer groups have benefited from knowing and seeing the repairs and restoration works being carried out by a specialised building contractor. The reassurance that these buildings were being restored and preserved through a staged process of documenting repairs, costings, quotes, on ground works and independent quality checks was very important to Phillip Island Nature Parks staff, volunteers, FOCIS and community members.”
