The extreme weather events at the end of August unearthed some significant heritage structures.
At Point Nepean, the scouring away of beach sands exposed a c.1854 kiln used in the production of lime. It also exposed a sandstone and marble tombstone likely associated with the ‘plague ship’ Ticonderoga.
At Inverloch, heavy seas washed away much of the beach to expose part of the hull of the shipwreck Amazon. Despite its size and weight, the exposed section then moved 60 metres across the beach in a storm and is now partly covered in sand again.
More recently was the discovery of a spar from a shipwreck at Portsea back beach as well as possible material at Ocean Grove.
Please report any possible finds of historic material to Heritage Victoria. The Heritage Act 2017 and Commonwealth Underwater Cultural Heritage Act 2018 provide protection for all buried historic sites and shipwrecks including loose material connected to them. Strong penalties apply for damaging or taking material. Please report any suspicious activity to Heritage Victoria.
